Casinos are booming:

According to the New York Times, 50 million people roughly one-in-five Americans play poker in the U.S; making it more popular than other sports such as golf, billiards, or tennis. It is estimated there are more than 150 million regular poker players across the world. 

Casinos are seeing explosive growth in their card rooms due in part to the success of poker on TV. Shows like Travel Channel's World Poker Tour, Fox Sports' Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament, Bravo's Celebrity Poker Showdown, NBC's Battle of Champions and National Heads-Up Poker Championship, and ESPN's World Series of Poker, GSN's High Stakes Poker, Fox Sports Learn From the Pros, GSN's Poker Royale, Travel Channel's Professional Poker Tour, Ultimate Poker Challenge, Poker Superstars Invitational reflect increased audience interest in gaming. Casino's report increases in both tournament play and live action.

There are 1,666 gaming properties in the U.S., 1,635 in Europe and a total of 4,641 worldwide. (Casino City Press - an independent information service not affiliated with any casino) .

The casino work force has increased more than 79%, from 198,657 employees in 1990 to 354,921 in 2005. Employment in gaming services occupations is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2012, the most rapid growth is expected among gaming dealers.  (2005 Casino & Gaming Market Research Handbook).

Racetrack casinos posted 17,000 new jobs in 2005, a 20% increase from 2004. (American Gaming Association). These employees earn higher average salaries than their counterparts in other industries (Arthur Anderson 1996) including health insurance, job skills and training and access to day care. (1997 Gaming Industry Employee Impact Survey).
